So recently, the 35mm Archive Telegram group finally got access to a big folder worth of raw Cinema DTS files and disc images, and this gave me the opportunity to finally preserve the original theatrical mix of A Bug's Life, since the original 2008 BD and later the 2020 UHD contain a new 6.1 matrixed remix of the film, likely to match Pixar's tradition of all their films being in Dolby Surround EX/DTS-ES, similar to what they did with Toy Story. I was actually planning to sync the UK Collector's Edition DTS mix with the UHD, but other things caused me to not work on it. I'd say me being hyper over this big folder is what led me to immediately do this.
Here are some notes I made while I was making this. Firstly, the Geri's Game (or jerrygm in the R14T5.txt file, making me confused it was Jerry Maguire lol) short is missing on Reel 1, due to it being included as part of the trailers reel, which means that I was able to start the first frame of the film perfectly as the first shade of blue appears when the Disney logo fades in, probably being that this is the ACTUAL first frame after 2 seconds after the 2-pop to comply with SMPTE standards. Next is that every reel transition is interesting to work on, because there seems to be 60ms of silence at the beginning of each reel, so I patched it with the first seconds of the next reel from the previous reel before it goes to 2-pop to signal the end of the reel, just so I don't make it sound odd. The only instances I didn't do it is at the end of reels 1 and 5, since reel 1 seems to have a quick millisecond fade out to silence before the next reel, and on reel 5 since even on the first seconds of that reel at the end of reel 4 has an awkward audio cut, so I fixed it to prevent any chorus effect. I do know there does exist a duplicate of reel 5 to include the second set of outtakes, but since the UHD only includes the first set like on the previous releases, except for the VHS (which includes both), I used the original reel 5 instead. Also, it seems that this is a post-1999 revision, so the LFE has been increased to 6 dB, based on what I compared to the 2008 BD mix, especially why it also has the alternate reel 5 as well. Also, the rear+LFE channels recieved a 60ms delay, so I fixed it.
