[Released] Star Wars - The Phantom Menace (1999) - 1080p - Reconstructed TC
#1
Hey guys.

I've had this project in the vault for some time.
This is a reconstruction of the theatrical cut of The Phantom Menace, using the Bluray as source. The missing/digitally altered/puppet yoda shots have been replaced with either the 35mm print that has been floating around for a while, or in some cases, the HDTV version (sometimes the HDTV is just better, and it doesn't have any missing frames!). All of them cleaned and graded to match the colors of the BD. The shot of mace Windu and Yoda in Qi Gong's funeral was a real pain in the ass to process (that flickering light... omg).
And, yes, I tweaked the colors of the film, mostly to tame the magenta push. A few scenes required more work to match the 35mm. Overall, the 35mm is not all that different from the bluray colors.
There is some additional processing to make it look more filmic: dehaloing, playing with soften and sharpen, adding a fine layer of grain...

It's been a while, since I did this one, but the audio track does include those "Vote now!" lines, buried in the mix in home versions.

Great work, but the BD or 4k as a source is just too far gone for me, it's lost all the fine details with the terrible DNR job Sad

The print is sourced from the digital intermediate anyway? Watching a scan would be nonsensical (except for the unaltered shots) since you lose detail from the filmout process and gain grain (and dirt).

For Episode I? I'm not too sure about prints being made from a DI. Episodes II and III, very likely. But Phantom used to be an actual film in 1999. And we all saw it on 35mm film back then.

There was no DI and the digital master they made was very low res.

It was well under 1080p

Sad
Ah, I see.
I'm afraid we won't have any release different from this in Lucas' lifetime Sad

TPM wasn't a DI finish but the majority, if not the whole movie was a filmout due to the VFX work. The scanning would have been 2K absolute tops, I think 1K was more common around that time.

Regardless, Sanjuro, what you did looks pretty good. I didn't watch the whole thing, just a quick glance, and the one shot I went to right away was a close-up on Liam Neeson that looks way overscrubbed and processed now officially and that you managed to make look more acceptable. Puppet Yoda looks well integrated, too.
