[Released] Escape from New York UHD 2.0 synced to RNP 35mm scan + SDU4 decode
#1
Escape from New York UHD pcm 2.0 Dolby stereo synced to Rob's Nostalgia Project 35mm scan (flac) + Dolby SDU4 decoded track (flac 5.0)

The print scan only had a -very decent- dual mono optical track

PM for link

Note on the decoding process, similar to the one commandrbond made for his Shure decoding:

Sound Blaster X-Fi HD RCA out goes to the SDU4 XLR in.  SDU4 L-C-R-S XLR outputs go into TRS inputs of a Behringer UMC404HD, 4 mono channels are recorded in Reaper at 48khz/24bits (to avoid any resampling down the line)
Playback and recording are done on separate computers to avoid ground loop or interference.
An empy LFE channel is added for playback compatibility (just like commandrbond I prefer to let the AVR handle bass management rather than create an unauthentic low pass filter).
The surround channel is duplicated, both SR and SL are attenuated by 3dbs.
The inputs of the SDU4 were very precisely aligned with a 1khz sine wave tone at -18dBFS.
The outputs of the SDU4 are calibrated at a very conservative level to avoid any clipping.
The mix is peak-normalized to the exact same peak level as the original undecoded track (preserving channel balance)
The mix is synced to the original Lt/Rt track and exported in flac 5.0, 48/24

oh I loved the one you did for alien, would love to hear this too. still won't let me pm though I'm afraid.I love the grading on robs scans but on a few of them the optical sound leaves a lot to be desired[not his fault I know but I quite like people like scanners inc using laserdisc audio for their scans]. someone on rutracker has encoded robs open matte print of the shining with multiple Russian overdubs but more importantly they have synced dts-hd audio{from what source I don't know as I don't know Russian} and it honestly felt like the holy grail hearing the sound in that fidelity with the 35mm image. don't think I've ever been more enamoured with being creeped the fuck out haha. also while I have your attention do you know why so many films running in to the 80s still had mono sound? I mean fantasias fantasound was basically the first film in stereo and that's from the 1940s, what gives? recently watched criterion's release of Alex cox's 1987 film walker and that had 1 channel. audio mean streets is the only film I prefer to watch in mono for Spector's wall of sound when be my baby kicks in at the start.

Most of the time it was simply budget related, as mixing and releasing a film in Dolby Stereo was more expensive than sticking with mono. It also took time for cinemas to adopt and properly maintain stereo playback, so mono remained a perfectly viable choice well into the 1980s
Kubrick is actually an interesting exception: he deliberately kept most of his films in mono (apart from 2001 and later Eyes Wide Shut), not because he disliked stereo, but because he felt he couldn't guarantee that audiences would hear a proper stereo presentation in theaters. His philosophy was basically: better a good mono mix everywhere than a bad stereo mix in poorly maintained cinemas.

ah that makes sense, I imagine it would have been twice the price to make them in stereo in the same way a modern stereo audio file would be twice the size of the same thing in mono. probably meant twice the info needed on the reel for cinema releases. I did not know that about Kubrick, makes sense but by christ the shining the is even more creepy with the soundtrack in very high fidelity. I only recently discovered that certain films from the early 2000's mainly LOTR trilogy and o brother where art thou will never truly be able to go above 2k because of how the final negative was mastered. I think James cameron's official 4k releases of his own films and the us of a.i to do so not only defaces his own masterworks but the fact he used a.i to upscaled them completely goes against the message of his best film. cheers for this I shall be watching it this weekend. recently watched rob's blade runner with the laserdisc audio and loved it. so much so I no longer hate the narration.
